Highlights
Interest in women’s football soared after England’ World Cup success in 1966, leading to the formation of several regional leagues.
The Midland Ladies League was founded in 1968. Several cup as well as a league competition were established.
Leicestershire’s leading women’s teams of the 1960s were British Railway (Wigston), Emgals (Leicester), Leicester City Supporters (Leicester) and Rainbow Dazzlers (Moira).
Arthur Hobbs organised a soccer tournament for local clubs in Kent in 1967, the matches taking place at Betteshanger Colliery Welfare ground. In the same year Warwickshire Ladies League established with 8 teams from Birmingham, Bedworth, Coventry, Nuneaton and Warwick.
Butlin’s Cup in association with ITV and the Daily Mirror. Games were played at Butlin’s holiday camps during the summer months of 1969 and 1970 with national finals for England and Scotland. The winners playing off to decide the ‘International’ champions.
The Women’s Football Association (WFA) founded with 51 clubs in 1969.
