1885-86 Season Summary

Highlights

Leicester Town became the first Leicester-based club to play in a cup competition when they met Wellingborough away from home in the Northamptonshire & District Cup in November. They won the tie 1-0 and were drawn against Bedford in Round 2. Approximately 1,000 spectators – the largest crowd at the time ever assembled to watch Association Football in Leicester – saw Leicester Town lose 1-0 a tight and exciting game.

The Young Men’s Institute Association Challenge Football Shield competition (open to all YMFS clubs in Leicester) was won by St Margaret’s.

6-a-side football contests took place in several north Leicestershire towns/villages.
