1890-91 Season Summary

Highlights

Loughborough ‘Town’ became the first Leicestershireshire club to feature in a regional league. They finished their one and only season in the Midland Football Alliance in a very creditable 3rd place.

The Leicestershire Football League – Leicestershire’s first Association Football League competition began. Although not all fixtures were not completed, it was possible to declare Gresley Rovers as League winners.

Coalville & District Football Association was formed.

Coalville Town won the inaugural Coalville & District Amateur Challenge Cup – Leicestershire’s first charity cup competition.

Minor teams competed for the YMFS Challenge Shield – little is currently known about this competition.

Several benefit games were played – for Leicester Infirmary, a memorial to 3 young men who had recently drowned, a suffering humanity fund, and Loughborough Hospital.

There were many instances of players missing trains and the away team consequently having to seek substitute(s) on arrival or play the game one or more men short.
