1916-17 Season

Highlights

The season was heavily affected by war events, including the Battles of the Somme and Verdun. Increased enlistment and casualties meant a constant struggle for clubs to field a team.

Competing in the unofficial Football League (Midland Section), the strain of war heavily impacted Leicester Fosse. The club finished in a dismal 15th place out of 16 teams. With match attendance dropping and the need to constantly rely on guest players (due to professionals enlisting), Fosse’s financial position became severely strained.

Local competitive football was largely suspended. The only football played locally consisted of friendly matches organised on an ad hoc basis, primarily for charity and schools’ matches.
