1891-92 Season Summary

Highlights

Much to the annoyance of Leicestershire cricket supporters, Leicester Fosse began their first Midland League campaign based at the Aylestone Road Cricket Ground (Grace Ground). They won their first home, game against Derby Junction (1-0). In all Fosse played 8 matches on the cricket ground before moving to Walnut Street (aka Filbert Street) including a heavy defeat against Small Heath in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup, along with several friendlies. Fosse finished the season bottom of the League.

Loughborough finished in third place, after losing their first Midland League match 4-0 away at Doncaster.

Numerous local matches were abandoned following disputes and protests. Away teams often arrived late which dramatically reduced the length of the game owing to darkness particularly between November and the end of February.

Travelling teams often failed to arrive without informing their opponents – leaving them and assembled spectators both disappointed and frustrated.

The Walnut-street ground [aka Filbert Street] opened. The first game was between Leicester Fosse and Notts Forest A Team – which ended 1-1. Forest had a goal disallowed in the final minute to the huge delight of the spectators.

The Midget Minstrels football team played 4 games in 4 days against Leicester-based clubs in November.
