1892-93 Season Summary

Highlights

Loughborough became the first Leicestershire club to reach the First Round of the FA Cup. More than 5,000 spectators watched Northwich Victoria, members of the newly formed Football League Second Division, beat them 2-1 at the Athletic Grounds.

The inaugural Leicestershire Challenge Shield – for ‘minor’ clubs – was won by Shepshed Rovers.

The first reported School’s football in Leicester took place in February 1893. The match was arranged by the Leicestershire Scholastic Association, to popularise Association Football amongst scholars. It must have been successful, because a Leicester School’s League was established for the start of the 1893-94 season.

Prior to the Fosse v Loughborough Midland League game in March 1893, a Luffs fan drew up and circulated a funeral card. His expectations were not realised – the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
