The Loughborough and District Charity Association was instituted in the summer of 1898 for the purpose of fostering friendly rivalry between the amateur clubs in the district, and at the same time providing funds for the Loughborough Hospital and Charnwood Forest Convalescent Home. The idea was first broached at a meeting of clubs affiliated to the Loughborough and District League, in February. Mr. F. R. Griggs generously presented a cup, which was been supplied by Mr. F. Stubbs. It was expected that sixteen or more clubs would enter the competition. A tenth of the amounts taken at the early rounds was devoted to the association, but these were anticipated to be small and it was to the final match chiefly that the association looked for financial results. Mr Walter Cockain was the chairman of the Council of Management, Mr M Billson, of Mountsorrel, vice-chairman, and Mr W Bates, the hon. secretary.
