Leicestershire’s first two inter-county matches – against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire – ended in draws.
Sheepshed won the county’s first Association Football competition – the Leicestershire Senior Challenge Cup. The club were eventually presented with the silver cup in March 1889, when the Association had the necessary funds to purchase it.
South Wigston rugby and association football clubs amalgamated.
